Selank

A peptide developed in Russia and studied there for anxiety. Very little of that research appeared in international peer-reviewed journals.

Regulatory status: Not licensed as a medicine in the United Kingdom. It holds no MHRA marketing authorisation, has no approved indication, and is not approved for human or animal use.

What it is

Selank is a laboratory-made peptide based on tuftsin, a fragment of an immune protein, with extra amino acids added to make it more stable.

How researchers think it works

Published papers proposed effects on GABA signalling and on brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and reported changes in immune signalling molecules in animals.

What has research seen in people?

Clinical reports from Russia described use in anxiety disorders and reported symptom-scale changes.

Almost none of that work was independently replicated in international journals, and study methods were often not described in enough detail to assess.

So the human evidence is limited and hard to appraise.

Where this material is listed

For laboratory research use only. Not a medicine and not for human or animal use.

Veritide does not sell or supply anything. This links to a third-party UK laboratory supplier; we may earn a commission if you buy through it, at no extra cost to you. Materials are sold for laboratory research use only and are not licensed medicines.

What studies have found

  • Russian clinical reports described use in anxiety disorders and reported symptom-scale changes.
  • Independent replication in international journals was very limited, and the original study designs were often not described in enough detail to assess.

What we still do not know

  • The evidence base is small, largely single-country, and hard to appraise.
  • No regulator outside Russia had authorised it at the time of writing.
